A psychoanalytical view of comics: looking at women in All you need is love

This article is about the representation of women in the specific case of the comic book story All You Need Is Love, by Fábio Moon, written in 2003 and published in the anthology Critica, in 2004. We will use the concepts of scopophilia, voyeurism, fetishism and sadism, diegesis and spectacle, the division of roles by gender (man as contemplator and woman as contemplated, man as the one who acts and woman as the reason for action). We shall also analyse the identification between readers/viewers and the fictional characters. This article will be based on the writings of Laura Mulvey, who used psychoanalysis to analyse the representation of women in cinema, Alain Bergala, Edgar Morin and Roland Barthes.Downloads
