Abstract

In one of several interviews in which he discusses his dissatisfaction with the philosophical horizon of his student days, dominated by Marxism, phenomenology and existentialism, Foucault makes the following statement: "For me, the break came first from Waiting for Godot, by Beckett, a breathtaking performance." My aim in this text is to lay the groundwork for understanding how it is possible for a work of literature to have such an effect - that is, to force us to think otherwise. Is it really possible for works of literature to change the people who read them? Or, to give this question a slightly different focus, are people able to change themselves through their literary readings?
