Abstract

109 patients with spinal cord injury were followed by a group of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, psychologists and social assistants at Hospital Universitario Regional do Norte do Paraná. Most of the patients with spinal cord injury (86,2%) were males. The injuries were more frequent on the 3rd and 4th decades of life, mainly between 21 and 30 years old (33%). The main etiology of the spinal cord injury was by automobile accidents (30,3%), followed by fails from height (27,5%) and fire gun (23%). The more frequent complications were urinary tract infection (73,4%) and pressure ulcers (27,5%). It is important to follow-up these patients, to prevent and treat the complications due to the spinal cord injury.
