The effects of the gtyphosate upon the morphology of the cotyledons, epicotyl and primary leaves of seedlings of Stizolobium aterrimum Piper et Tracy, were studied under laboratory conditions. Seeds were germinated in plastic trays covered with filter paper, soaked in water. On the sixth day after sowing, the seeds were transferred to glass cm bottles containing distilled water or 0.01; 0,10; 1.00; 10,0 on 100-0 mg aijl solutions of the glyphoste. The seedlings were collected for analyses 15 days after sowing, Inhibition in the development of the epicotyl ocurred above the dosage of 1.00 mg a.i/l of glyphosate, with concomitant anatomical alterations of the shoot apical meristem when treated with the greatest dosage of glyphosate. The herbicide did not significantly alter structures in the middle region and did not alter the size and structure of the cotyledons but inhibited the consumption of reserve material when at the greatest dosages. Above the level of 0,10 ring a.i/l, it began a progressive reduction in the development of the primary leaves, which caused a compaction of the mesophyll.
