Abstract

The increase of the elderly population in Brazil follows a trend that has already occurred in developed countries, issuing considerable challenges to the health services and professionals due to the great number of pathologies with various symptomathologies, prevalence of age-degenerative chronic diseases that frequently depend on prolonged or continuing drug therapies, transforming these individuals into great medicine consumers, being possibly the most medicated age group in society. Thus, the pharmaceutical assistance as a component of the care strategies that aim at promoting the rational use of medicine and therapeutic education, may provide a better relationship between health professionals and patients, enabling the elderly to deal with possible side effects and information on the drugs, contributing for the adhesion to the treatment which, consequently, becomes more efficient.
