Interference of the management area journals in determining the historically most influential publications in Information Science and Library Science

Abstract

Objective: find the reason way unexpected results were generated in determining the most historically influential publications (landmarks) of Information Science and Library Science (CI&B) of the Web of Science (WoS).
Methodology: We retrieved data from all CI&B articles and reviews, from the period 1980-2017 (N=93,330), identified and analyzed the journal areas of the articles that cited the landmarks.
Results: We show that the journals that most cite the first two CI&B landmarks are from the Management area; Business and Information Systems. We also show that five of the first ten landmarks have contents strongly focused on Management, Sociology, Marketing, Communication, and Information Systems and that they only appear as CI&B landmarks because they are cited by journals in the Management area, categorized in WoS, also, as CI&B. In the case of the “Information Metrics” area, the result reveals publications recognized in the literature as landmarks.
Conclusions: When a study of a research area is developed using the WoS categorization as a basis for the sample, another area can interfere in this study, producing inconsistent results. Analyzing the categorization of journals, as performed by this study, is essential to correctly assess the impact of an article, as the production metrics used in academic evaluation need to be normalized by field.
