SKOS: an analysis of approaches and applications in the Science of Information

Abstract

Introduction: In view of the ever-growing application of technologies in the field of information science and the organization and representation of knowledge, the Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) is used as a data model to represent the organization systems of Knowledge (SOC). Within this context, a research has been conducted on the basis of the Information Science and Technology Abstracts (ISTA), Library Information Science Abstratcs (LISA), Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts (LISTA) and Scopus to enhance the analysis and categorization of the approaches of Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) in the literature and its applications. Objective: To search for scientific articles in national and international literature in periodicals, and analyze the approaches and applications on the SKOS. Methodology: Exploratory and descriptive with a quantitative and qualitative approach. The activities are organized in four stages, resulting from the objectives, collection, treatment and analysis of the search results. Results: It is assumed that there are works related to SKOS, but this is still timidly approached, considering the international scope of this study and the scientific articles to be an important theme in both information science and in the knowledge organization, so as to foster new research proposals in this context, in order to collaborate with the analysis of the silence in studies in Skos. Conclusions: Considering the criterion of temporality, many gaps have been found in several years. The studies began timidly, but they recorded a relative growth, with some exceptions of decline. It is worth noting that the articles are mostly related to the application of Skos in controlled vocabularies, considering the broad meaning of this term.
