Formada em filosofia pela Universidade de São Paulo, Helena Hirata especializou-se em sociologia com ênfase em comparações internacionais do trabalho, sobretudo nas relações que envolvem as questões do gênero no mundo do trabalho. Atualmente é pesquisadora do Genre et Rapports Sociaux (GERS) do Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, na França.
