Territorialities of the Quilombola Community Passo dos Brum, in São Sepé, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

Abstract

This article presents the methodological course of Machado's (2023) study on the territorialities produced in the Quilombo Passo dos Brum (São Sepé, RS), seeking to demonstrate how social dynamics, kinship ties, and collective memory intertwine to form an ethnic territory. The specific objectives were to analyze the social structure based on kinship lines, map territorialities via social cartography, and identify cultural practices of resistance. The methodology, developed between 2017 and 2023, combined mixed methods with a strong ethnographic bias. The results indicate that the quilombo's territoriality is a dynamic process supported by three pillars: kinship lines, ancestral memory, and daily cultural practices, such as festive events and forms of land use. It is concluded that the quilombo constitutes a space of (r)existence, where the struggle for land ownership and the appreciation of ancestry are central to the construction of a resignified identity, affirming its presence against external pressures.
