Challenges and Prospects for Minas Gerais Military Fire Department (Brazil) to participate in the Voluntary Carbon Market a narrative literature review

This study provides a strategic framework for including the Minas Gerais Military Fire Department (CBMMG) in the voluntary carbon market (VCM). Based on a narrative literature review, the research categorized potential projects derived from CBMMG activities and structures according to internationally recognized system and current VCM trends. The results identified three main project categories: 'Forestry and Land Use,' 'Transportation,' and 'Renewable Energy.' The first category is the most promising, as it aligns with the core activities of the organization and the high demand within the VCM. Methodological limitations and regulatory uncertainties suggest caution in the eventually implementing projects. Nevertheless, CBMMG's participation in the VCM could reduce operational costs and contribute significantly to decarbonization goals, reinforcing its role in disaster risk management related to climate change. Given the multi-scalar benefits, initiatives that foster a robust and secure structure for the engagement of Fire Departments in the VCM are expected to emerge, tailored to their diverse realities.
