The seminarians of Bernardo Guimarães and Rubem Fonseca: comparative reading according to the thought of the atheists dawkins and eagleton

Abstract

From the thought two atheists with divergent views about God and religion, this essay examines how Bernardo Guimarães and Rubem Fonseca, authors of homonyms novels, <i>O seminarista</i>, written in the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries, respectively, underlie their works. Both can be read as a sharp criticism of religion, but it is interesting to note how their characters live in different historical moments. While Eugênio, in the nineteenth century, has a strong connection with God and with the clerical life, despite his unholy loves, the second, José, in actuality, killed God.
