Abstract

How to say the exile? How to say it without reducing it to theory, without sterilizing it amidst academic quotes, without romanticizing it beyond its tangible and ghost-like reality? How to turn the exile into a communicative effort, instead of a rhetorical exercise – how to say it as one who keeps alive in the tip of one’s fingers the hope of (re) building a community? This article seeks to analyze the margin and the center in Junot Díaz’s short story collection, Drown (1996), interweaving such analysis with selected texts from Edward Said and Terry Eagleton, and focusing on themes such as exile, migration, and Diaspora. In order to achieve that goal, the article wanders through Díaz’s recreated geography – the North American urban landscape exposed in its solitude and its contradictions.
