Abstract

We analyze the short-stories ‘La Vénus d’Ille’, by French Prosper Mérimée, ‘La ajorca de oro’, by Spanish Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, and ‘Chac Mool’, by Mexican Carlos Fuentes. This paper aims to show that each short-story presents a singular narrative configuration, although the texts are written through use of a similar narrative aspect: the ánima (living statues). Then, the fantastic genre gets a singular configuration in each short-story – fantastic in the Mérimée’s short-story, uncanny in the Bécquer’s short-story (Todorov 2006), and marvelous realism in the Fuentes’ short-story (Chiampi 1980). So these narratives create critical configurations of the relationships between their age and their aesthetic approaches.
