Magazines in the Front: approaches between Belém Nova and Revista de Antropofagia through manifestoes in the 1920s

Abstract

This article analyzes the approximations between the Belém Nova magazine and the Revista de Antropofagia, from the literary manifestoes published by them in the 1920s. Even when we consider the combative and modernist character of their publications and the presence of authors publishing in both, differences in relation to the perception of the regionality and brasility conveyed by them are key points to better understand the cultural magazines of the period and the modernist movement itself. The relations were thought from the connection of the modernists of São Paulo with those of the Amazon, especially Oswald de Andrade, Raul Bopp, Abguar Bastos and Oswaldo Costa. Understanding the manifestos as instruments of disputes used by the authors and the magazines, one starts from the debate about the Brazilian modernisms, going through the regional disputes over the artistic and aesthetic preponderance, until arriving at the relativization of these regionalism. In addition, observing the presence of authors from the Amazon linked to the Belém Nova magazine and the modernism of the north in the pictures of the Revista de Antropofagia, we start from the hypothesis that the contours of the anthropophagic movement were defined with the presence of ideas and ideas existing among the artists. The Revista de Antropofagia would be the mouthpiece of a movement whose roots extrapolate the regionality of São Paulo, bringing together Brazilian modernity and tradition in an attempt to reconfigure national modernism.
