Abstract

C. S. Forester was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1899. His career in literature included books on history, biographies and historical novels , most with themes related to war at sea. One of his best known novel includes the life of a fictional Horatio Hornblower. Forester was a scholar of the Napoleonic period and Hornblower was born of his imagination as an officer in the British Navy in the Nelson´s time. Forester wrote a series of ten finished and one unfinished books about Hornblower 's life and his adventures in a constant struggle against Napoleon Bonaparte. Endowed with a vivid imagination, Forester based his character in Horatio Lord Nelson and Thomas Cochrane, both British heroes of that period. His latest book in the series, still incomplete , was released in 1967, one year after his death. Forester is one of the most important novelists of British naval literature. The aim of this research is to describe Forester life and Hornblower adventures in the Royal Navy, seeking to identify points of contact with the real characters of the period and analyse some features of his personality, as imagined by Forester.
