A bridge over the Atlantic: the exiled and the relations between Brazilian and Portuguese political polices (1950-1970)

Abstract

This paper works with the relations established between the Brazilian and the Portuguese political polices between the decades of 1950 and 1970. This research was made with bibliography, interviews and through consultation with the material obtained with the old documentation of the organs of repression of the two countries, in the case, of the DOPS – Department of Political and Social Order of the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Pernambuco e Paraíba and, in the Portuguese case, of the PIDE/DGS – International and State Defence Police/General Security Directorate archive. In special, this documentation brings out the vigilance of the activities practiced by their respective exiled, what, for its turn, equally took to a series of imprisonments. It is a documentation not published before which reveals the contacts between the repression acts of these two countries, in different political contexts in Brazil and in Portugal. The documents here analyzed, besides revealing the vigilance activities, also demonstrate the political and cultural activities of the investigated ones. Thus, moreover elucidating the contacts between intelligence services from the two countries, they also bring us the contacts between Brazilian and Portuguese activists and, in many cases, their actions in exile.
