The seropositivity of rheumatoid factors were studied in 77 subjects with rheumatoid arthritis. The positivity determined by the Latex Fixation Test was 58,4% while the Waaler-Rose (W.R.) was 28,5% the moment the diagnosis was made. As the patients were followed, the seropositivity increased to 66,2% for the Latex and 37,6% for the Waaler-Rose. The clinical criteria were most important for the diagnosis. Invasive technics rarely were necessary. According to our study, the Latex is preferred as a screening procedure as it is less expensive and more sensitive. The Waaler-Rose, then, should be reserved for those special cases of diagnostic difficulty or for clinical trials.
