Care for the person with autism spectrum disorder and their family in emergency care

Nursing has as its essence caring and acts as the front line of health care in most services. Thus, these professionals are faced with the diversity of human health conditions, which includes the Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This article has as objective to analyze the performance of nurses towards people with autism, as well as their families in the Emergency Care Units through a descriptive research with a qualitative approach carried out through semi-structured and audio-recorded interviews, transcribed in full and analyzed using the method of analysis thematic category. Eleven nurses working in the Emergency Care Units belonging to a municipality in Foz do Rio Itajaí (Santa Catarina) participated in the research. Through the speech of the interviewed professionals, it was evident that there is some knowledge about the disorder on the part of nurses, but in a limited way. It is clear the needing for the role of the family as a link between the patient and health professionals and the provision of humanized care to these patients. Thus, the importance of a greater approach to the ASD in the academic and continuing education of these professionals is highlighted, aiming at providing quality care and that is in accordance with accordance with the subject’s particularities.
