Malnutrition: a warning sign in the community of the São Lourenço Basic Health Unit, Londrina – PR

Malnutrition in childhood represents a serious problem, as it compromises the child's growth and development, which can lead to serious sequelae in the nervous system, as well as favoring the occurrence of other diseases. The present study aimed to evaluate the level of nutrition of preschool children (0 to under 7 years old) in the area covered by the São Lourenço Basic Health Unit. Regarding the nutritional study, anthropometric data were collected from 124 children who, through a questionnaire prepared by the group, were also characterized in terms of family income, number of family members, breastfeeding, parental education, vaccination, need for hospitalization, etc. Based on the Goméz criterion, children were classified as eutrophic (normal) and malnourished, and, of the 124 children surveyed, 69 were malnourished. Of these 69, 55 had grade I malnutrition and 14 children had grade II malnutrition. The data showed that the family income of 80% of malnourished children is up to 3 minimum wages and that 50.72% of these were hospitalized in the last year.Downloads
