Abstract

A descriptive qualitative research that aimed to understand the experience of the family living with care-dependent patient with stroke caused by hypertension. The Grounded Theory was used to study seven families living in Maringá-PR. Data were collected between March and July 2007 through open interviews and unsystematic observations conducted at the residence of the family. The following categories emerged: Living with the consequences of stroke: “I miss talking to her”; Facing rehabilitation: “So you have to fight!” and changes in care for hypertension after stroke: “He changed the food ... mostly.” The study of this issue contributes significantly to the understanding of family members living with hypertension and dependence on their families, encouraging reflection and from there to proportionate possible changes in professional attitudes concerning assistance to this condition.
