A distribuição dos solos em uma paisagem pode ser entendida levando-se em conta a organização morfológica dos horizontes pedológicos. A descrição detalhada dos perfis de solo, a nível de campo, permite o estabelecimento de um modelo espacial do comportamento dos volumes pedológicos ao longo de uma encosta.
