Apresentar algumas considerações a respeito da problemática sócio-ambiental nas cidades contemporâneas, apontando os embates entre as questões sociais e ambientais na produção, no planejamento e gestão do espaço urbano, cujo o ônus recai sobre partes da cidade apenas, a chamada cidade informal. Assim, discorre-se a respeito da emergência de um novo paradigma no planejamento e gestão urbana que procura integrar meios de solucionar os problemas sócio-ambientais nas cidades, de modo a produzir um espaço urbano socialmente equitativo e ambientalmente saudável.
