The environmental zoning is a strategic planning tool, allowing the feasibility of including the environmental variable at different stages of the decision-making process. This research aims to present a strategy for Environmental Zoning as a tool for planning at the municipal and the micro-region levels, starting from the homogeneous micro-region of Vale do Açu as an experimental area. As a result, it was found that the municipalities in the micro-region of Vale do Açu present a stage of severe degradation, mainly driven by oil and ceramist activities, plant extraction and shrimp farming. Aiming to manage the planning and management actions of the natural resources at a municipal level, we propose the delimitation of three key areas, considering the analysis of the use and land covering as a starting point: 1) Restricted-use zone, 2) Risk zone and 3) Environmental recovery zone. We conclude that, at the current landscape situation regarding the occupation of the Piranhas-Açu river banks, an immediate decision-making is needed with actions aimed at the environmental regeneration of the degraded areas, as well as at the densification of the flora in the native vegetation areas which have been already impacted.
