Permanent preservation areas (APP), defined by the Brazilian federal forest laws were created to protect the natural environment and the representative Brazilian ecosystems. The criteria used to demarcate these areas are almost always subjective, often resulting in inadequate boundaries that cause the misuse of natural resources. This study made use of Spring 5.1.6 program and Google Earth to map and identify areas of permanent preservation in the municipality of Itaara, RS, Brazil using the classifier with the best performance. Four categories of APP's accompanied by a quantitative diagnosis of each them. Obtained up as a result of the study 46.5% of APP's are areas with slopes above 45, 12.3% are in areas with riparian vegetation were identified and 41 2% are areas of native forest.
