Queer Interactions between Text and Image: A Reading of Fun Home by Alison Bechdel

This paper investigates the interactions between queer theory and writing of the self by analyzing the graphic novel Fun Home published by Alison Bechdel in 2006. Starting from the assumption that Bechdel's autobiographical practice is representative of contemporary political questioning, it is pointed out that Fun Home is a negotiation between the personal and political fields when narrativizing the past and its traumas through the hybridity between text and image. For the proposed discussion, some theoretical contributions are Santiago García (2012), Guacira Lopes Louro (2004, 2016), Sidonie Smith and Julia Watson (2010) and Hillary Chute and Marianne DeKoven (2006).
