Limit, literature, lobster: The “Chronicle” by David Foster Wallace

In this paper we aim at analyzing the text “Consider the lobster” (2004) by
the American writer David Foster Wallace. Through a reading focused on the
construction of the reader, we show how the chronicle can fit a writing marked by
simplicity and complexity because of its hybrid and flexible character. With a keen
eye for one precise aspect of reality, the author is able to reveal the shadows of
contemporaneity, showing how readers engage in it through difficult moral choices
of everyday life, like accepting that a living being can suffer just to satisfy a
sophisticated palate.
