The place of the cross is the sacred space of the altar of the Church of Santa Barbara, to whom Zé-do-Burro had made a promise, in payment for the cure of his donkey Nicolau. The dramatic tension occurs during the execution of the promise, when Zé is prevented from entering the church. Accused of having committed heresy by mixing Christian signs with candomblé rituals, the doors of the sacred temple are closed to the payer of promises. The following analysis points out this tension between the sacred and the profane in the play O Pagador de Promessas, by Dias Gomes. Mediated by the studies of Mircea Eliade, we present an understanding of the meaning of the spaces (sacred and profane) in the play and the fate of Zé-do-Burro's cross.
