Abstract

Analyzes the presence of possible allusions to the Song of Songs in the medieval work O Espelho das Almas Simples, by Marguerite Porete. To do so, confronts the first of the twelve titles attributed to "simple soul", namely "very wonderful", with a pericope of the biblical text mentioned above (Ct 6.4 to 7). We conclude that the predicate directed to that soul functions as a kind of synthesis of "charming, fascinating and impressive" triad adopted in the biblical text to designate the "beloved". It was also observed that both simple and beloved souls are in a state of absolute stillness, reflection of love directed at them. Thus, Porete's book reveals liable to a secular literary tradition of assigning a fundamentally allegorical interpretation of the Song.
