Abstract

This article’s aim is to make a comparative analysis of “The man of the crowd”, by Edgar Allan Poe, and “Quadros parisienses”, by Charles Baudelaire, considering the appearance of modern cities and the new identity configurations that permeate the urban space, such as the flanêur. The analysis will show the conflicts that underlie the perceptions regarding the city and the modern man, demonstrating how Poe and Baudelaire reflected about modernity, as well as the relationship between these reflections and a subversive attitude that define the writers considered as outsiders.
