The vision of death in Florbela Espanca's poetry

Abstract

Death can be considered the greatest sadness of our existence. It interrupts projects, dreams and a stable life. The relationship of human being with it is one of disgust. However, has death always been seen this way? In an era where the material attachment was not as strong as the present day and destiny ruled people's lives, was this image similar to ours? To raise these data, we are going to use the studies from Philippe Ariès, who surveys the vision of death in medieval societies. We are going to see how all this applies in the poem "À Morte", by Florbela Espanca, and try to understand what is the image of death created by the poet.
