Abstract

Dispersion and exile are founding themes of ancient epic. As such, they remain linked to central devices of these compositions. This paper discusses the update of this model in two relatively recent Brazilian poems: galáxias, by Haroldo de Campos (1984) and Invenção do Mar, by Gerardo Mello Mourão (1997). Our purpose is to highlight that, though the poems address those themes as a basis to an experience of alterity, linked to a catastrophic event, some traditional devices, as the ideal of objectivity and of completeness of the work of art, remain unchanged, at least in the passages in question.
